After 10 years on YouTube, how we learned that AI has made us powerless, passive and inept, and have we killed our channel in the process?
On Monday 15th June we removed our entire back catalogue of videos from our YouTube channel. This was in response to discovering that our content was being copied and published on TikTok under a fake account. Has this killed our YouTube channel? What should we do next? We have been publishing videos on YouTube for nearly 10 years and seen lots of changes in that time. We have only ever been a small channel with a handful of stand-out videos that have reached over 100k views.

Let's talk car parking in Cornwall!
A number one hot topic is parking! With so many different companies offering parking monitoring services, with different rules from every company, are we entering a new Wild West? Regularly, we receive emails asking ‘Where do I park?’ ‘How much is it?' ‘Am I likely to get a fine?’ ‘What apps should I download?’ ‘Where can I park for free?’ Unfortunately, we have no easy answers to these questions. We have noticed a growing number of privately owned car parks adopting the A

Tea Shop Walks
Here at Cornish Walking Trails we are always on the look out for ways to make a walk more interesting and enjoyable. We are also looking out for any trends that might be something our audience will love. When we were on holiday in Yorkshire recently, we were browsing the selection of walk books in one of the National Park shops. It was interesting to see how the walks were categorised. Each book had a theme, for example Tea Shop Walks, Pub Walks. We love a good cup of coffee

Suckered in - A most expensive ham sandwich!
We recently made a vlog at Downderry, near Looe. We knew it was going to take us a long time to film because we had 10 stories to tell and a 2.5 mile walk on the SWCP to Portwrinkle to complete. Our plan was to arrive in Portwrinkle, abandon the car, and catch the 10:11 am bus to Downderry. Once arriving we planned to film most of our stories and then have lunch in the local pub. We are all aware of the decline in the number of pubs, with higher costs causing closures and we

A traditional Cornish breakfast!
Where do you go in Cornwall for a traditional Cornish breakfast? And, just what makes it Cornish? Andrew loves a good breakfast! Crispy bacon, yummy sausages and hot buttered toast are all ‘must-have’ ingredients for a great breakfast. In our opnioin, the addition of Hog’s Pudding makes it a Cornish breakfast. Hog’s pudding is similar to a sausage but larger. It primarily consists of pork mince with breadcrumbs, herbs and spices. Traditionally, each village butcher would have

The Cornish Daffodil
At this time of year, our hedgerows, gardens and fields are filled with a bright yellow, courtesy of the humble daffodil. Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, particularly the Scillies, have been growing, picking and sending daffodils to London markets for years. Our milder climate encourages them to flower from early February onwards, maybe earlier with a mild winter. In our collection of old books, there are photos of the flower pickers and articles extolling their beauty. Fo

Tehidy - what has happened since Storm Goretti?
Now that the weather is brightening up, I took the opportunity to revisit Tehidy. What could be better than a dog walk in the spring sunshine? After weeks of wet weather, I was a little trepidatious that the paths would be muddy or even still impassable with trees strewn like matchsticks. Tehidy is a popular amenity for families, dog walkers and cyclists. It spans over 250 acres from the north cliffs at Bassett Cove to the parish of Illogan in the east, and Coombe in the west

Hello Everyone!
And the rain, rain, rain, Came down, down, down Of that there’s no denying Hello everyone! Firstly, let me say that we feel as if we have been battling the dreary, wet and windy weather continually since the beginning of the year, and we would like to thank you for watching. In January, Storm Goretti tore through the Duchy devastating our landscape and pushing trees over as if they were matchsticks. We were shocked by its ferocity and for the first time, felt unsafe in our

Falmouth - 1930s Slums clearances - did they get it right?
In this week’s video we explored behind Market Street. We discovered hidden architectural details hinting at the past and learnt about the slum clearances that happened in the 1930s. But did they get it right? After completing two of the detailed historical walks in ‘Three Falmouth Walks’ written by the Falmouth Civic Society in 1982, I think I have a greater grasp of how Falmouth has evolved and developed over the years. Behind Market Street there used to be densely packed h

Will you celebrate National Cream Tea Day?
In Cornwall, there are plenty of opportunities to sample a Cornish Cream Tea. Today cafes offer plain or fruit scones with clotted cream and a choice of fruit jams. If you want something a little more indulgent, a full afternoon tea is also available with a selection of delicate little sandwiches, mouthwatering sweet cakes as well as a cream tea. A little bit of history! As a child, I remember Cornish Splits being the staple of a cream tea. A Cornish Split is a sweet, buttery

A Cautionary Tale - Has spontaneous dining gone forever?
This weekend our daughter paid us a flying visit from university. We also had two celebrations in the family so before she returned early on Monday morning, we wanted to dine out. Much debate ensued - where shall we go? Our daughter wanted to try St Ives but I was cautious with it being the day after change over day and the beginning of half term. ‘We may struggle to get a table’, I said. Little did I know that would be the theme of the evening! We tried a couple of places in

Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind messages of love and sympathy following the passing of our beautiful boy. He has been one of the most loving, energetic and loyal dogs, and we have so many happy memories of him. He came into our lives as a 14 week old puppy, who had been rejected as a show dog because of his white tail. When we went to view him, the breeder brought him in and just plonked him on my lap and I think we both knew that we would not be leaving without him. After al

Finding Inspiration! St Ives, Cornwall
While we are still in lockdown and unable to travel very far to film our usual walking videos, we have had plenty of time to look back through some archive photos and footage. With so many shots and clips, how do we decide what to post? In the world of the internet, people search for ‘what they know’. What do I mean by that? Well, if you have heard of Cornwall, then you have probably heard of St Ives and it must be one of the most popular Cornish related searches, along with

Our Cornish clotted cream journey
During January 2021, we set out to make a video about a Cornish Cream Tea. We generally make walk related videos for our YouTube channel, however for a change we thought it would be fun to make an alternative video based on a Cornish theme and decided to show us making scones from a reliable recipe and Cornish clotted cream, then devouring them - jam first! We knew that Andrew makes a good scone and we were not worried about that aspect. However, we have never made clotted cr

Our recommended scone recipe - so reliable!
For reliable results we recommend this recipe from the Hairy Biker's family cookbook "Mum knows best!". Andrew loves a good, big scone with loads of jam and maybe a little bit of clotted cream and he also loves to bake. When he discovered that he is quite good at baking, he caught the bug and regularly knocks up a batch of scones. He has to fight for them though as our son loves them just as much as him! The book was published in 2010 and brought together a collection of trie

Four years on YouTube!
Today, the 6th September 2020, is our four year anniversary on youTube, so we wanted to reflect on what we have achieved so far. In order to see our progress we had to have a little think back to what it felt like in the beginning... When we started our channel we felt like we knew nothing - because we knew nothing! We were stumbling around in the dark. Our son, James was in to online gaming, Team Fortress 2 comes to mind and, with one of his friends built a new computer, gif

Have you used holiday accommodation since COVID lockdown was eased?
If you have been watching our channel for a while, you may have watched one of our 'Stay in Cornwall' vlogs. These vlogs are designed to give you an insight into the accommodation, the standard, and we suggest one or two walks that are local to the area - almost planning your trip for you! At the beginning of the year we had plans to stay in varying types of accommodation. We filmed a couple of vlogs in March just before lockdown and felt it was not appropriate to release the

So what do you do with sea glass?
Sea glass is constantly washing up on our shores in various stages of opacity and smoothness. So what do you do with your sea glass? Pop it in a vase? Make jewellery? Maybe hang it like a crystal in a window to catch the light? The smooth, well-rounded pieces, resembling pebbles are my favourite, the ultimate piece of sea glass that makes you smile when you find it! Evoking that feeling of tumbling in the sand and sea, it is thought that it can take up to 40 years to achieve
